The concept of GOD!!

Does the title make you think am an atheist ?????

Nawww... Just read on...

The other day my Chinese friend and I were having a chat that had innumerable "not-so-important" things that were scrutinized and a very interesting topic was stumbled upon.
She did not have any religion. Rephrasing it, she does not understand the concept of GOD.
I was very surprised and that eventually led to the question of "don't you pray at all? don't you get blessings from elders? ". The answer was a NO.

If someone talked to you about how an algae in the sea bed of the pacific ocean, or some weird chemical composition of rocks that lie dormant on the surface of moon will you understand it ? ...she asked me. I said well logically speaking, being what I am (as I tell people peria padippu padichuiruken ), I will try to understand it, but am not sure how far I can really appreciate it or why its being told to me. Thats when she got me right on the point. She said thats exactly how she felt about GOD. She tries to understand the concept of GOD, but since she has not grown up knowing him (GOD), she does not have that concept in her mind and cannot really appreciate him.

Biologically, her mind does not sense GOD, because it doesn't know of such a "thing". Me being me, by this time had innumerable number of "what ?" questions whirling in my mind. So I asked her, what will you do when you have a problem? Pat came the reply, think about how to solve it, talk to friends, get help and eventually solve it. Number two was, What will you do if someone you love is sick? wouldn't you pray?.... Sick? Sick? well in that case I will take them to the doctor and be by their side. That will make me and them happy. Now I was very confused, because I do everything she tells and still I need GOD with me. Now it struck me ...the million dollar question ...... How will you marry? Will you not go to some place of worship? Won't you have some ceremony? ....Marriages are different for us. We gather at restaurants along with our parents, friends and relatives, then the master of the ceremony tells that the bride and groom are wed and they tell us the story of how they met and how they decided to get married. We make fun of them, laugh and make merry. Thats how we marry.... I was flabbergasted by this I should say.

My friend continued.... may be this is because of the communist rule China has been in. I was born with no concept of GOD around me. We live up to our conscience. We respect people for their age and follow rules. We try not to harm nature, anyone or anything and we try to be friendly and loving. We don't have any functions or festivals other than the Chinese new year, the national day and the communist day. Thats how we have been and I don't think we are missing on anything. Saying these words she smiled at me. I too felt exactly the same thing. I don't think she is missing anything that most of my god fearing friends or I have. In fact her country is one that is setting landmarks for its growth and prosperity that generations of other countries did not.

This incident did throw light on an entirely new dimension. She was not an atheist, who said GOD does not exist. She was not a theist either, but she was one who did not know GOD. She is my friend.

P.S: - Wanted to add a comment that my patti always had about atheist. "Nathigan than swami pathi nareya yosipan namme yosikarthe vide...Namme swami namaskaram panitu karyathuku poiduvom...avaluku karyema swami pathi pesarthu than.....". Wish she was here to say a few words about this third new dimension......

Dear Harini

It is a thought provoking subject and recalling my school days when i read kannathansan's Arthamulla Indumatham.
I used to raise the questions myself about existence of God and who am i. I got little clarity about the believe of GOD after reading that series of Books. From your chineese friend I could understand that they are giving great value to the older and experienced people . And that is what we call it as our sasthiram and sambirthayam.Nowadays they also started celebrating X mas and go for masses in churches.

Harini !

Ur blog is quite well written, thoughts transformed in a more comprehensive manner.
But again, GOD aint a concept .. it does not deals with idealogy at all. Tats my understanding.
Its purely an intellectual creation , for the benefit of human existence in harmony.
And if tats the fundamental reason, the day we are now...violates the law in all possible ways.
Allah hates Christ..Shiva Hates vishnu..Amman hates Thayaar..
Did we ever see a movie or ever read a story...Where GOD's wage war at each other...but yeah there was this movie.. "GODS MUST BE CRAZY"..lol

I cannot reach far beyond my ceiling, except if i was trained like jackie chan.
How can we expect people to think or reach beyond earth ?...This very moment..What you see..feel and smell..is the ultimate truth.
And to put it in a technical fashion...that we are used to..(apparently)..its a continual graph..tat goes on an infinite x-axis...with a 0 limit y-axis...LOL.!! weird isnt it !....but tats how i perceive life...you move from one point to another point..wich has zero distance inbetween.

Now...I totally admire ur patti's words...but to add more flavour to it...I would say..even an atheist is confused. He/She has got into the entanglement of whether the concept of GOD exists or not. It aint a concept dear .. from the words that i've read..from those wonderful people I've met...GOD is a creation for the existence of not so called intelligent humans. Something very similar to "Marraige"..rituals/ceremonies are performed to tell each other "I love you" and "Lets lead life together". I might well just say "I love you..i feel comfortable being with you..why not we give our shot upon living together ..Iam on board..are you willing to ?".
Iam just trying to keep things as simple as possible. Whether the concept of GOD exists or not..is an unnecessary discussion by itself. You might ask.."Dont you beleive in GOD then"..well..my answer would be .. "I dont have a reason to".
Everyone have their reasons and excuses to fall upon something. This is purely psychological. Wen ur down..u wanna talk to ur mom..ur lover..or ur son/daughter. Someone whom u feel close with. This is just being human...Absolutely understandable.
But..To me its so weird and funny..wen someone goes to a temple .. or church..and cry for their worries to be solved.
A good example..is wen my grandfather passed away a couple of years ago...my mom cried so much. Then she went to the temple the other day..and was asking Pullaiyar "Why did u take my father away..He was the one who gave me this life..made me become a respectable woman in the society..i have wonderful kids now "..I told her "If you had asked the same question to the Doctor who did not treat him properly wen he was ill..who loooted all ur money wen u admitted him in the hospital..you could've got a logical answer" "If you could've asked this question to your brother who did not take care of your dad wen he was ill... who did not give a damn wen he was all alone in the house...you could've got a logical understanding of what relationships are ".
She was annoyed first...but then wen she really thought about it..it made sense !..Dont i ?

Life's so simple..its we who make it complex..If am right....Even ur chinese friend is afraid becoming god fearing one day.
Deep inside ur mind..thers always a fear..tat something mite happen..Wich again is the murphy;s law" If something can go wrong..it will"...So y not just live ur life to the fullest at this moment and be the best at it..every now and then!!.

Dang it!..u made me speak a lot ..Cos..I always think whether GOD exists or not !! ha ha ha !!
Everyone is always trying !!

@Preet: Stereotyping people is a sin. Generalizing that we take pride in our culture and don't forget our religion and roots is a bigger sin.

Thank You
